The Sierra Leone Police has recorded a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat organised crime, following the dismantling of a suspected syndicate linked to the theft of commercial motorbikes and tricycles, popularly known as kekehs, in the eastern part of Freetown.
The operation was carried out by officers attached to the Kissy Division, who acted on intelligence to conduct a targeted raid on a residence located at No. 1 Railway Line in Rokupa. The move led to the recovery of several stolen vehicles believed to have been taken from different parts of the city.
According to police, a total of seven kekehs and seven motorbikes were retrieved during the raid. Officers also seized a number of accessories suspected to be linked to the illegal operation, further strengthening the case against those involved in the criminal network.
Investigators revealed that the success of the operation was largely driven by a violent robbery incident that occurred on April 7, 2026. The incident involved a victim, Mohamed Santigie Kamara, who sustained serious injuries after being attacked with a machete by unknown assailants. The brutality of the нападение prompted an intensified investigation by the police.
Following swift action, officers arrested a key suspect identified as Mohamed Bangura. During questioning, Bangura reportedly confessed to his involvement in the преступление and provided crucial information that exposed the existence of a wider syndicate operating within the area.
Police sources indicate that the group is believed to have been involved in the systematic theft and resale of commercial motorbikes and tricycles, which serve as a major source of livelihood for many young people in the capital. The recovery of the stolen vehicles has therefore been welcomed as a relief to victims and operators affected by the thefts.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to track down other members of the network who are still at large. The police have assured the public that all those connected to the syndicate will be brought to justice.
The Sierra Leone Police has also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities within their communities. They emphasized that community cooperation remains a key factor in tackling crime and ensuring public safety.
This latest development highlights the continued commitment of the police to protecting lives and property, while sending a strong warning to criminal elements that such activities will not be tolerated.
