The Local Unit Commander of Bo East Division, Ishmael Koroma, has engaged residents of Boama Chiefdom in a bid to reinforce community policing and enhance public safety.

The meeting brought together local stakeholders and community members to discuss security concerns and identify practical ways to maintain peace across the chiefdom. Speaking during the engagement, Koroma commended residents for their continued efforts in preserving stability, particularly in areas such as Gerehun, which he described as relatively calm.

Despite the progress made, he warned against complacency, stressing that sustained vigilance is necessary to prevent crime and disorder. He highlighted emerging concerns around the activities of commercial motorbike riders, commonly known as okada riders, noting that their operations require closer monitoring to ensure they do not become a channel for unlawful activities.

Koroma urged residents to take an active role in supporting law enforcement by reporting suspicious movements and individuals within their communities. He emphasised that effective policing depends on cooperation between the police and the public, adding that timely information sharing can significantly improve response and prevention efforts.

The engagement also focused on the growing threat posed by substance abuse. Participants discussed the legal and health implications associated with the misuse of drugs such as tramadol and Kush, which have become a concern in several communities. Authorities used the opportunity to educate residents on the penalties linked to drug related offences and the long term impact on individuals and families.

Community members, in turn, raised concerns about response times to incidents and proposed the establishment of a temporary police post within the chiefdom. They argued that a closer police presence would enhance security and allow for quicker intervention when issues arise.

Koroma welcomed the suggestion and assured residents that their concerns would be considered as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen policing structures in the area. He reiterated the police commitment to working closely with communities to maintain peace and order.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both police and residents expressing readiness to deepen collaboration in order to sustain stability and improve safety across Boama Chiefdom.
