The National Scrabble Association of Sierra Leone (NSASL) in collaboration with Rokel Commercial Bank (RCBank) Sierra Leone Ltd. is sets to organise a scrabble competition for Sierra Leoneans.  NSASL encourage students from all secondary schools and universities in the country to be part of the process by applying to be contenders. The date for the competition has been slated for Saturday 19 August, 2023 to commence at 10:am at the Freetown Amusement Park Hall (Victoria Park). The theme for this competition is “BRINGING SCRABLE TO ALL SIERRA LEONEANS.” This was unanimously agreed after a successful meeting between a cross section of members of both the NSASL and RCBank on the 7 August, 2023.

Some senior officials of NSASL commented that they have the strong desire to develop education and build the capacities of Sierra Leoneans and competence of Students through scrabble; as this can best be achieved by creating the platform where students from all secondary schools and universities will have the opportunity to be part of the game in a competitive manner with contenders from the National Side and from other professionals. NSASL clearly note the importance of inclusivity and places greater preference on gender equality whilst encouraging and looking forward to female participation from secondary schools and universities.

The team from NSASL commended RCBank with great complement for the bank’s support which led the Scrabble Association to successfully win the close tie with a neighbouring country ‘for country of host’ ahead of the African Scrabble Championship that will be hosted in Sierra Leone by October 2024.

According to the team members from NSASL, bringing scrabble to all Sierra Leoneans is also a fine strategy to enhance the preparedness, building the competence and increasing the confidence of Sierra Leoneans ahead of the forthcoming African Scrabble Championship. RCBank is in the view that; since Sierra Leone has been granted the hosting rights of the African Scrabble Championship in 2024, this could be a great opportunity to showcase the bank and to contribute to the development of young Sierra Leoneans ahead of the African Championship Competition.

As a result of the keen interest of Dr. Walton Ekundayo Gilpin – Managing Director and Echief Executive Officer – MD & CEO, RCBank – in the scrabble game, a star prize for the winner is set at NLE2,500 (New notes), NLE2,000 (New notes) for the second-best player and NLE1,500 (New notes) for the third best player including medals and promotional items from RCBank for all three players.

The application is open to all Sierra Leoneans including students from Secondary Schools and Universities above the ages of 13. Trials of successful applicants will be conducted on Friday 18th August at the Freetown Amusement Park in consideration of the order of the selection process. As applications are accepted on the 8th – 17th of August 2023, interested Sierra Leoneans, Secondary School and University Students who wish to compete can access their application forms through the details below or through Sierraloaded Digital Platform and send snap shots/scanned copy of their completed forms to the contact(s) below via WhatsApp:
