The Sierra Leone Immigration Department has commenced an induction training programme for 120 newly recruited immigration officers and assistant personnel as part of efforts to strengthen service delivery and border management across the country.
The training, taking place at the Civil Service Training College in Freetown, is being conducted under the leadership of Chief Immigration Officer Moses Tiffa Baio. It marks a key step in preparing the new recruits for the demands of immigration service in a rapidly evolving security and administrative environment.
According to officials, the programme is structured in two batches, with each group undergoing an intensive three day session. The approach is designed to ensure that all participants receive focused attention and adequate exposure to both theoretical and practical aspects of the job.
The training covers a wide range of topics aimed at equipping recruits with essential knowledge and operational skills. Participants are being introduced to the laws, policies and regulations that guide the operations of the Immigration Department. This foundational understanding is expected to help them carry out their duties in accordance with national and international standards.
In addition to legal frameworks, the sessions are placing strong emphasis on ethics and professionalism. Trainers are highlighting the importance of integrity, discipline and accountability in the discharge of duties, noting that immigration officers play a critical role in maintaining public trust and national security.
The programme also focuses on clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of immigration personnel. Recruits are being guided on how to effectively manage border control processes, respond to emerging security challenges and support efforts aimed at improving migration management systems in Sierra Leone.
Officials say the initiative reflects the department’s broader commitment to capacity building and institutional development. By investing in the training of new personnel, SLID aims to enhance operational efficiency and ensure that its workforce is well prepared to meet the expectations of modern immigration services.
The training is also aligned with national priorities to strengthen border security and improve public service delivery. With increasing movement of people across borders, authorities have underscored the need for well trained officers who can balance facilitation of travel with enforcement of immigration laws.
Participants have expressed optimism about the opportunity, noting that the training provides a strong foundation for their careers in public service. They acknowledged the importance of the programme in preparing them to handle real world challenges in the field.
As the sessions continue, officials have indicated that further updates will be provided on the progress and outcomes of the training. The department remains confident that the initiative will contribute to building a more professional and responsive immigration service capable of supporting national development goals.
