The Director of Operations, Sierra Leone Police Force (SLP) AIG Mohamed Brima Jah has informed the press that certain individuals that include senior personnel of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces– RSLAF, name witheld, are in custody for allegedly planning to stage a peaceful protest in the country.
Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Jah Monday 31 July 2023 read the public notice announcing to what is being alleged as coup to journalists at police headquarters, George Street, Freetown.
Jah disclosed that preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspected individuals planned to use what he referred to as a purported peaceful protest slated 7th to 10th August 2023 as a guise to unleash violent attack against state institutions and peaceful citizens.
“The security sector has been following intelligence regarding such activities of certain individuals”, he said.
The security sector notes with dismay that despite continued efforts to consolidate police hard won peace and democratic gains, there are individuals at home and abroad that who continue to undertake actions meant to derail the peace and tranquillity of the nation, the press release/public notice states.
It therefore assures the public that said situation is fully under the control of security sector and urged all to remain peaceful and law abiding and go about their normal business.
“The release called on members of the public to report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities”, he said.
