The 2023 election in Sierra Leone has been marred by controversy and allegations of direct interference by the SLPP government, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the country’s political future.

The election, which saw Dr Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara poised to win and lead the All People’s Congress (APC) Party to governance, was disrupted by President Bio’s alleged meddling and collusion with Mohamed Konneh, head of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL).

This interference led to a premature announcement of election results, triggering a series of events that have left Sierra Leone in a state of turmoil.

As a result of the election irregularities, development partners have withheld funding, citing concerns about the lack of democratic principles in the electoral process.

This funding freeze has exacerbated the challenges faced by the people of Sierra Leone and strained diplomatic relations with key international partners such as the USA and EU, who have condemned President Bio’s actions as undermining democracy.

The volatile political climate between the SLPP government and the main opposition, the APC, prompted the formation of a tripartite committee to address the election irregularities.

This committee is viewed as a crucial step towards resolving the political crisis and restoring stability in the country. Until the committee completes its work, the fate of Sierra Leone remains uncertain, with democracy itself hanging in the balance.

Undoubtedly President Bio is aware of the consequences that lie ahead if the current threat against democracy is not resolved

The international community, particularly the US and EU, is closely monitoring the situation in Sierra Leone to prevent future interference in democratic processes.

The need for transparency, accountability, and respect for democratic principles in Sierra Leone is emphasized as essential to rebuilding trust and stability in the country’s political system.

At the end of the day, steps must be taken to ensure that such interference does not occur again, safeguarding the democratic future of Sierra Leone.

Until then stay tuned
