The Minister of Public Administration and Political Affairs, Amara Kallon has disclosed in Freetown that due to the compassion President Julius Maada Bio attached to the welfare of civil servants, government has established a Wage and Compensation Commission.
Minister Kallon made Tuesday 5 September 2023 the disclosure whiles addressing journalists at government’s weekly news conference, hosted by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, at the conference hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation, Tower Hill, Freetown.
Mr Kallon said the move is geared towards reforming the country’s public service and strengthen state institutions, adding that the Wages and Compensation Commission is presently at the formation stage, with all what it takes the commission to carry its operations without hindrance. And explaining that the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone has already ratified the long anticipated Act. All we are now waiting is to constitute a formidable management to run the Wages and Compensations Commission, which will be appointed by the President and approved by Parliament’, he said.
The Public Administration and Political Affairs Minister observed that the journey to wages harmonization is still a long way citing challenges of the unavailability data set. He defined data set as personal information of civil servants which include pin code, National Social Security and Insurance Trust number and the National Identification Number, which the commission need in its drive for salary harmonization.
Mr Kallon reassured all of government’s efforts towards the harmonization of public sector and civil service salaries scale, and continued that the Wages and Compensation Commission is among the President Bio’s dream, which cannot be unconnected to the reason why it was included in the President 2023 manifesto.
During my tenure, the ministry had undertaken lot of activities including the establishment of the Peace Commission, constant engagement with the Human Resource Management Office, Public Management Office, Public Service Reform Unit, Head of Civil Service Management, Secretaries to the President and Vice President to discuss pertinent issues on the way forward, Minister Amara Kallon recalled.
