Sierra Leonean entrepreneur and business strategist Joe Abass Bangura has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Sierratel, in a move expected to strengthen the company’s leadership and drive a new phase of growth.

Mr Bangura, a Chartered Accountant and serial entrepreneur, is widely recognised for his work in business leadership and corporate development. He is also known to many as the host of the popular “Life by Design” show, where he shares insights on personal growth and success. His appointment signals a strategic effort to inject fresh thinking and innovation into the operations of the national telecommunications provider.

The announcement was welcomed by key stakeholders within the sector, with expectations that his experience will help reposition Sierratel in an increasingly competitive market. Over the years, the company has faced challenges ranging from infrastructure limitations to market competition, making leadership a critical factor in its revival.

Speaking on the appointment, Shadi Gerjawi, Chief Executive Officer of Africell, expressed confidence in Mr Bangura’s ability to deliver results. He noted that the decision reflects a strong belief in Bangura’s track record and his capacity to lead transformation within the organisation.

According to Gerjawi, Bangura’s background in strategic growth and innovation aligns with the broader vision of strengthening Sierratel’s service delivery and market presence. The partnership between Africell and Sierratel is already focused on improving reliability, expanding access, and enhancing customer experience, and the new Managing Director is expected to play a central role in achieving these goals.

Industry observers say the appointment comes at a critical time when the telecommunications sector in Sierra Leone is evolving rapidly. With increasing demand for digital services, mobile connectivity, and financial technology solutions, effective leadership will be key to ensuring that Sierratel remains relevant and competitive.

Mr Bangura is expected to bring a results driven approach, leveraging his experience to explore new business opportunities, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen customer trust. His entrepreneurial background is also seen as an asset in navigating the dynamic and often challenging business environment.

As he takes on his new role, attention will be on how quickly he can implement reforms and deliver tangible improvements. For many, his appointment represents renewed hope for Sierratel as it seeks to reclaim its position as a strong national telecommunications provider.
