The National Union of Sierra Leone Students (NUSS) has honoured Rtd. Hon. Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, former Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, at the National 70 Most Influential Students Awards 2026 held at City Hall in Freetown.
The colourful ceremony brought together students, lecturers, policymakers and development partners from across the country to celebrate academic excellence, leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship among young people.
Seventy outstanding students drawn from universities nationwide were recognised for their achievements and contributions in various fields. The awards scheme aims to spotlight emerging leaders who are making meaningful impact within their institutions and communities.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Tunis challenged the awardees and the wider student population to move beyond recognition and focus on creating measurable change in society. He urged them to see the honour not as a final destination but as a call to greater responsibility.
He stressed that Sierra Leone’s future depends largely on the ability of its young people to transform ideas into practical solutions that address national challenges. According to him, innovation, discipline and a strong sense of purpose are essential qualities that must guide students as they prepare for leadership roles.
Dr. Tunis also encouraged students to embrace integrity and service, noting that true leadership is defined by impact rather than titles. He reminded them that the country needs thinkers, problem solvers and change makers who are willing to contribute to national development.
Officials of NUSS said the awards are part of efforts to motivate students and create a culture of excellence across higher education institutions. They noted that recognising positive achievements among young people helps to inspire others to strive for similar success.
The organisers highlighted that the selection process was competitive and based on clear criteria, including academic performance, leadership involvement, community service and innovative initiatives. They emphasised that the honourees represent a new generation of leaders capable of driving progress in Sierra Leone.
Several award recipients expressed appreciation for the recognition, describing it as a source of encouragement to do more. They pledged to continue working hard in their respective fields and to use their platforms to influence positive change.
The event also served as a platform for networking and collaboration among students and stakeholders. Participants engaged in discussions on how to strengthen the link between education and national development, particularly through innovation and entrepreneurship.
As the ceremony came to a close, there was a shared sense of optimism about the role of young people in shaping the country’s future. The recognition of the 70 most influential students was seen not only as a celebration of achievement but also as an investment in the next generation of leaders.
With growing emphasis on education, creativity and leadership, NUSS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting students in their journey toward excellence and national service.
